In Almora, breaking the orthodox tradition, three daughters not only shouldered their father’s bier but also lit the funeral pyre at the cremation ground.
Basant Ballabh Pandey, a resident of Ranidhara, Almora, died at the age of 85. Basant Ballabh Pandey was retired from the bank. His son, advocate Dinesh Pandey, had passed away some time back. Basant Ballabh also passed away on Wednesday. In such a situation, when it came to shouldering and lighting the funeral pyre, his three daughters Sunita, Bhavna and Bharti came forward. The three sisters shouldered their father’s bier.
Along with the funeral procession, the three sisters reached the Vishwanath crematorium and lit their father’s funeral pyre. Daughters broke the conservative thinking that had been going on for years. Sunita Pandey said that even daughters are not less than anyone. He has fulfilled his duty by performing the last rites of his father. With the daughters coming forward, the conservative thinking of the society will end in the coming times.
