Ecuador’s President Guillermo Lasso has appealed to the people to maintain peace in a tweet. The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the magnitude of the earthquake was 6.8. It occurred at a depth of 66.4 km (41.3 mi), about 10 kilometers (6.2 mi) from the city of Balao in Guayas province. Ecuador’s Risk Management Secretariat has issued a statement saying that several areas in the city of Cuenca have lost power. The earthquake caused damage in two other provinces. The tremors were felt in more than half of the country’s 24 provinces.
