Taking strict action against the ever-increasing problem of traffic jam, the High Court has banned the entry of all types of taxis in Nainital city. In such a situation, now taxis coming from outside states will be stopped outside the city itself. Not only this, the High Court has also banned bike taxis running in Nainital city and issuing new permits.
A division bench of Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi and Justice Rakesh Thapliyal has directed the state government to comply with the order of Ajay Rawat vs. In an order given in 2017, the High Court had banned taxi permits in Nainital. It was being written in the permit conditions that taxis would be banned in Nainital. The court has said that this ban will also be applicable on commercial taxis coming from other states and other districts of the state.
The state government came up with the Taxi Bike Scheme in the year 2020. Under this scheme, more than one thousand people took bike taxi permits in Nainital city, but during the tourist season Nainital was facing traffic problem due to sudden increase in the number of bike taxis. On this the Nainital administration fined the bike taxi. Against this, taxi bike businessmen Praveen Kumar, Lalit, Nikhil, Piyush Sah had filed a petition in the High Court. He had said that he should be allowed to do business. Because he has taken the taxi bike under the Chief Minister Self Employment Scheme of the government. It was said in the petition that vehicles from other cities and other states can run in Nainital, but the people of Nainital are not getting permission to run bike taxis in their city. But the High Court has issued an order banning taxis, rejecting the petition
