Mahashivratri is celebrated on Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month, on this day Shiva devotees worship with rituals. During Mahashivratri fast, worship is done in all four hours. There are special rules for observing Mahashivratri fast. On the day of Mahashivratri, one should go to the temple and worship Lord Shiva and take a resolution of fasting. Then during the puja, along with offering water to Shivling, also offer Bholenath’s favorite thing. Shami flowers, Akad flowers, Linseed flowers, Jasmine flowers, Dhatura flowers and Kaner flowers are very dear to Lord Shiva. By offering these flowers on Shivalinga, Lord Shankar becomes very pleased and showers his blessings on the devotees.

In the worship of Mahashivratri, Belpatra, hemp, Dhatura, raw cow’s milk, sandalwood, roli, camphor, saffron, curd, ghee, mouli, rice, honey, sugar, seasonal fruits, Ganga water, sacred thread, clothes. The worship materials used are perfume, Kaner flower, garland of flowers, khus, Shami leaves, cloves, betel nut, betel leaf, gems, jewellery, Parimal Dravya, cardamom, incense, pure water, Kalash etc.

People observing fast on Mahashivratri should consume satvik food and fruits etc. on this day.
On Mahashivratri, remember Lord Shiva with full devotion and take a resolution to fast.
After this, bathe the Shivling with Panchamrit and anoint it with water.
Chant Shiv Panchakshar Mantra i.e. Om Namah Shivay in the worship of all four Prahars.
Offer Belpatra, hemp, Dhatura, nutmeg, lotus leaves, fruits, flowers, sweets, sweet paan, perfume etc. to Mahadev.
