Chaos in West Asia: Explosions resonate in Tehran, major Saudi refinery shut down after Iranian drone attack

Tehran/Riyadh: Tensions in West Asia have now taken a devastating turn. Following joint military action by the US and Israel, a series of powerful explosions were heard in various parts of Tehran, the capital of Iran, today. These attacks have raised fears of a major conflict across the region. According to the Iranian Red Crescent Society, at least 555 people have been killed and more than 131 cities have been affected in these airstrikes so far.

Iran has also begun responding to these attacks. Following the Tehran drone attacks, Saudi Arabia’s state-owned oil company, Aramco, has shut down its renowned Ras Tanura refinery as a precaution. With a capacity of 550,000 barrels per day, this refinery is one of the most important oil hubs in the Middle East. The shutdown is likely to have a profound impact on global oil supplies, causing panic in international markets.

Meanwhile, Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), shared some comforting information. He told the Board of Governors that, based on information received so far, Iran’s nuclear sites have not been damaged. Grossi said he is trying to contact Iranian authorities, although there has been no immediate response from Tehran. The global community remains concerned about nuclear security.
The fire of war is now spreading to other countries. British Foreign Minister Copper has confirmed that an unidentified drone attacked a UK military base in Cyprus, targeting the runway. Security at the base has been increased following the drone attack. As the scope of the attacks expands, a red alert has been issued for civilian safety. The coming hours will determine the future course of West Asia.
