Guwahati. A cinema hall in Guwahati has been fined Rs 67,000 by the consumer court. Actually, a lady had gone to watch the movie in the cinema hall. During this, the rat bit the woman’s leg.
Kamrup’s District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission ordered Bhangagarh-based Galleria Cinema to pay Rs 40,000 to the woman for mental agony and Rs 20,000 for pain and suffering, besides reimbursement of medical bills of Rs 2,282 and another Rs 5,000 as litigation costs. Instructed to give
The woman’s lawyer Anita Verma has said that on October 20, 2018, at 9 pm, the woman had gone to the hall with her family for a film show. During the interval, he felt that something had bitten his leg. She passed out immediately after bleeding. The cinema hall staff failed to give him first aid and none of its staff accompanied him to the hospital.
Verma said he was kept under observation at the hospital for two hours as doctors initially did not know who had bitten him. Rat bites were later treated. After that the woman approached the consumer forum against the cinema hall operators.
The woman’s complaint was accepted in the consumer forum after five months. The debate on the matter was completed on 30 March. The woman had sought a total of Rs six lakh as compensation for mental agony, pain and suffering, apart from reimbursement of medical expenses. Countering the allegations, Galleria Cinema said that proper cleanliness is maintained in its premises. He offered first aid to the woman, which she refused. Galleria Cinema urged the court to dismiss the complaint.
After hearing the arguments no evidence could be produced in view of the documents produced by the woman and in support of the claims made by the cinema hall. The court ordered the payment of compensation on April 25
