Dehradun. Now the villagers themselves will take charge of drinking water schemes in around 15 thousand villages of Uttarakhand. Whereas the operation of big drinking water schemes connecting many villages will be given to Drinking Water Corporation and Jal Sansthan.
The Rural Drinking Water Scheme Operation and Maintenance Rules 2024 were approved in the cabinet meeting held at the Secretariat on Saturday under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. According to sources, in this manual, standards have been set for the maintenance of drinking water schemes in the villages of the state. Officials said that the drinking water scheme made for a village will be operated by the Gram Sabha itself. For this, the responsibility of determining bill or fee etc. will also be decided at the Gram Sabha level. However, fee exemption will be provided for Antyodaya and those living below the poverty line. Gram Sabha can run the schemes through any self-help group, women’s group or any village committee. A decision in this regard was taken in Saturday’s cabinet meeting.
