Power-water crisis strikes before summer begins

More than 4500 water sources in the state are dry, 1200 water sources are on the verge of drying up

Kashipur. Even before the arrival of the summer season, the sound of electricity and water crisis has started to be heard in the state. There is not enough electricity available in the state to meet its needs, due to which power cuts have already started.
While the government has banned the strike of employees in the three power corporations to deal with the power crisis, the officials of the Energy Department are trying to find a way to solve this crisis. The state currently needs 40 to 42 million units of electricity, but the state has only 27-28 million units of electricity available, including 300 MEGAWATTs from the central government. The special thing is that the consumption of electricity is increasing every day with the increase in heat, there is a shortage of 11-12 million units of electricity every day, in which 5-6 million units of electricity has been arranged by the Power Corporation somehow, but due to lack of electricity, 5-6 million units of electricity is either being cut or it is completed by purchasing it. On which the government is spending 4 to 5 crore rupees per day. The central government has not yet taken any decision on whether the 300 MW cheap electricity that the state has been getting from the central government till February 28 will continue. Looking at the current situation in the state, it seems that the people of Uttarakhand should be prepared to face an unprecedented power crisis this year. One special thing is that the power crisis also has a direct impact on the drinking water system. The power failure also disrupts drinking water supply, which has the biggest impact on urban areas, but this year the rainfall in the state in January-February has also decreased by 62 percent compared to other years, due to which the water sources have already started drying up. For the last 10 years, the process of drying up the natural water sources of the state has continued continuously and more than four and a half thousand water sources of the state have dried up and 1200 water sources are on the verge of drying up. Changes in weather or global warming are also affecting the availability of electricity and water. In February itself, glaciers are melting rapidly due to heat like May, the water level of the state’s rivers is already decreasing, which is bound to affect both power generation and drinking water in the coming days. The kind of indications from the weather and the current situation are clearly indicating that in this year’s summer season, the people of the state will have to face a severe crisis of electricity and water. Although preparations have already been started to deal with this crisis at the level of governance and administration, how much it will be able to deal with this challenge, only time will tell.
