Dehradun. Uttarakhand has created history on Monday. The much-awaited Uniform Civil Code (UCC) has been implemented in the state. In the history of independent India, Uttarakhand has become the first state in the country to implement UCC. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said on this historic occasion that today is a proud day not only for Uttarakhand but for the entire country.
Chief Minister Dhami issued the notification of UCC and launched the UCC portal ucc.uk.gov.in. He said that now all citizens in the state will get equal rights under the same law. He also said that Scheduled Tribes have been kept out of the purview of this law to protect their customs.
Key points of UCC:
- Registration mandatory for live-in relationships: Couples living in live-in relationships will now have to register.
- Rights of children born from live-in: Children born from live-in have also been given equal rights.
- Online registration: Online registration facility has been provided for all the cases falling under UCC.
- Clear rules: Clear and simple rules have been made under UCC so that people do not face any kind of problem.
Chief Minister Dhami said that before preparing the draft of UCC, the expert committee had contacted 2.35 lakh people. He said that by implementing UCC in Uttarakhand, the state government is paying true tribute to Baba Saheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar and all the members of the Constituent Assembly.
Why is UCC important?
The purpose of Uniform Civil Code is to implement equal law for all citizens. This will eliminate the discrimination present in personal laws and all citizens will get equal rights.
What changes will come in the society?
With the implementation of UCC, many changes can be seen in the society, such as:
- Women will get increased rights.
- There will be equality in matters related to marriage, divorce, inheritance etc.
- Social justice will be established in the society.
Opposition also:
There is also opposition to the implementation of UCC. Some people believe that this will curb religious freedom.
